Pronghorn in Buenos Aires NWR

BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS STRIKING WILDLIFE PORTRAIT “PRONGHORN IN BUENOS AIREA NWR” (NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE):

“Pronghorn in Buenos Aireas NWR” offers an accurate portrait of North America’s native Pronghorn. (It’s often called an “antelope,” but that’s not correct.)

Other than the bison and the bear, no large mammal is more identified with the American West than the Pronghorn. These amazing creatures seem to pop up out of nowhere, always on alert and ready to run at any moment. And run they can. Seeing them race across open prairie is thrilling. They’re built for speed.

“NWR” in the name of this painting, “Pronghorn in Buenos Aireas NWR,” refers to Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge in southern Arizona.

Martha had been to Buenos Aires NWR before, but it was my first visit. Seeing Pronghorns for the first time, I tried to capture in quick sketches both their strength and their delicacy of form. “Pronghorn in Buenos Aireas NWR” is based on my sketches and a close-up photo that Martha made on that trip.
