The Sangre de Cristo Range of the Rocky Mountains — locally known simply as “The Sangres” — is spectacular in any season. But it comes into its own most vividly in the fall. That’s when the aspens turn mountainsides into sheets of yellow and the cottonwoods do the same with river corridors.
In this painting, Bernie captured that glorious season with a clean, crisp, modern style. It’s one of the last pieces he made, and clearly he wasn’t slipping a bit when he painted it. This website is the only place it’s ever been publicly displayed.
