Shuntavi Butte

BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS GORGEOUS “SHUNTAVI BUTTE,” MADE ON SITE AT ZION NATIONAL PARK:

I painted this bullet-shaped, thousand-feet-high peak known as Shuntavi Butte on the spot. The magical late-evening light brought out the sculpted forms of the Kolob Canyons area in the northwest part of Zion National Park. I had to work fast to make the plein air piece work, but once it was finished I knew I had captured the scene exactly as I’d seen it.

The isolated Kolob Canyons area does not get as many visitors as Zion National Park’s main canyon does, but its sculpted cliffs and forested plateaus are equally spectacular. Martha and I have visited there several times. We always come away awestruck.
