Tent Rocks Trek

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ SITE-SPECIFIC “TENT ROCKS TREK”:

This painting shows a couple of friends of ours on a real-life hike through rugged terrain sometime in the early ’00s. I was traveling elsewhere at the time, so I didn’t take part in it. But Bernie and the others spent the day hiking in Tent Rocks National Monument, a spectacularly beautiful  location near Santa Fe.

The geology of this one-of-a-kind national monument is remarkable. Thousands of years ago, explosions ripped the Jemez (pronounced hey-mez) mountains. They deposited rock and ash across a wide area. Later, over time, erosion and weathering created cones of soft pumice and tuff, topped by harder caprocks.

Fortunately, American preservationists have protected this area, which is now officially known as the Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument.

Bernie carried his camera on this trek and made a series of photos on site. Later, back in his studio, he painted this engaging watercolor and two others: Tent Rocks” and Hoodoos“.
