Above Abiquiu Lake

MARTHA MARKS NOTES ABOUT BERNARD MARKS’ VERY SPECIAL OIL PAINTING CALLED “ABOVE ABIQUIU LAKE”:

Bernie loved Abiquiu Lake. And he also loved the nearby distinctive rock formation (seen in the background here) that locals simply call “Pedernal.” He painted them together as a pair of natural features, over and over again. But this is the only time when he focused on those dramatic boulders in the foreground.

I believe this was his last take on what’s widely known as “Georgia O’Keeffe Country”… named for the famous artist who came here from the East and made Abiquiu and this gorgeous area her home for the rest of her life.

I also believe “Above Abiquiu Lake” is one of his best, with its very different perspective and bold portrayal of the lake’s rocky shore. I’m proud to offer it here for the first time anywhere.
