Morning Light on Abiquiu Lake and Pedernal

BERNARD MARKS WROTE THIS ABOUT HIS LUMINOUS “MORNING LIGHT ON ABIQUIU LAKE AND PEDERNAL”:

Pedernal is the distinctive formation in the background on the right. Locally, people do just call it “Pedernal,” without “the.” It’s one of the most recognizable landmarks in the gorgeous northern New Mexico area widely known as Georgia O’Keeffe Country.

Georgia O’Keeffe painted this distinctive formation many times and loved it so much that she had her ashes scattered there after her death. Like her, I’ve painted it from every imaginable angle, more times than I can count.

Pedernal stands on the north side of the Jemez (pronounced HEY-mez) Mountains, near the town of Abiquiu (pronounced a-BIH-cue) and Ghost Ranch, where O’Keeffe lived. The soft blue water in the foreground of this piece is Abiquiu Lake.

MARTHA MARKS NOTES: In total, this website offers four of Bernie’s oils and acrylics of the same “Georgia O’Keeffe Country”: Above Abiquiu Lake,” “Ghost Ranch Landmarks,” “Morning Light on Abiquiu Lake and Pedernal,” and Sunset Over Abiquiu Lake.

His watercolors of the same area are: “Abiquiu Lake and Pedernal,” Cottonwood by the Chama River,Chama River in Fall,” Plaza Blanca, Rio Chama Overlook” and “The Chama River.
