Plaza Blanca

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ ETHEREAL WATERCOLOR “PLAZA BLANCA”:

Like Bernie’s exquisite “Black Mesa” watercolor, this ethereal “Plaza Blanca” watercolor also portrays a well-recognized place in northern New Mexico. Its dominant color is white instead of black, so the two paintings set up a perfect pair of contrasts.

If you Google “Plaza Blanca New Mexico,” you’ll learn that this formation is one of many special sites in what is known generally as “Georgia O’Keeffe Country.” There’s no end to the beauty in northern New Mexico. Bernie captured that nicely in this piece and the others below.

In total, this website offers four of Bernie’s oils and acrylics of the same “Georgia O’Keeffe Country”: Above Abiquiu Lake,” “Ghost Ranch Landmarks,” Morning Light on Abiquiu Lake and Pedernal,” and Sunset Over Abiquiu Lake.

His watercolors of the same area are: “Abiquiu Lake and Pedernal,” Cottonwood by the Chama River,Chama River in Fall,” “Plaza Blanca, Rio Chama Overlook” and “The Chama River.

NOTE: Abiquiu is pronounced a-BIH-cue.
