Ducks in the Marsh

BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS COLORFUL “DUCKS IN THE MARSH”:

There’s something peaceful about watching ducks in the marsh, serenely paddling across calm water. Maybe it’s because they are so well suited to their environment. These two were clearly comfortable in Bosque del Apache, a world-famous national wildlife refuge in central New Mexico. I went there expecting to do a painting of the marshy landscape, but the ducks stole the show.

MARTHA MARKS ADDS:

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is one of my long-time favorite places. I’ve spent many wonderful days there by myself, but once I took Bernie there, he also enjoyed it often, too. It’s a dream spot for both the wildlife photographer (me) and the painter (him).

Usually, he stuck to making colorful landscape paintings like “Bosque del Apache Early Color” and “Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge.”

But this time, since I was the one with the wildlife-shooting equipment, he encouraged me to “capture” these ducks in the marsh. A few days later, back in his studio, he worked his magic on our mutual subjects. You can see his wonderful way with water and wild grasses… not to mention those two show-stealing ducks!

In all, this site presents seven paintings where Bernie used my photos to provide the details that he either couldn’t safely get close enough to see or didn’t have time to paint on site.
