MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ “PLAYING WITH THE PIGEONS,” AN EXUBERANT PORTRAIT OF CHILDHOOD:
Anybody who has ever hung out on street corners for any period of time has seen a scene like this. As a grown man, Bernie didn’t hang out in such places very often, but when he did he almost always came home with an interesting plein air watercolor.
As usual in such cases, he brought back a rough sketch and photos that would allow him to make this final painting at the drawing table in our kitchen, which served as his studio in those days.
And I so loved this bright, cheerful piece that he produced from those sketches and photos that we ended up framing it and enjoying in our home for years. Decades later, even after we moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, this watercolor still occupied a special place in our home.
The original painting is no longer available, but I can offer top-quality archival prints in all sizes, including prints as large or larger than the original. What a lovely picture for a little girl’s bedroom!
PLEASE NOTE: Many other original “Early Bernie” street paintings from Chicago were sold long ago. But the following pieces from the same general place and time were in our possession into the digital age, so we do have digital photos for good quality but smaller prints.
