MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ LOVELY SNOW SCENE “VILLAGE IN WINTER”:
Bernie and I married in 1968 and moved to the northern Chicago ‘burbs in 1969. By the early ’70s, we were happily exploring Wisconsin on weekends and holiday getaways. I have photos of Bernie painting there throughout the ’70s and early ’80s.
I believe this was the first of Bernie’s paintings that we decided to frame and hang in our early apartments. His signature “MARKS” is in pencil, faded but still visible in the lower right corner.
After his name he noted the year: ’72. It’s one of only two paintings on this site that he identified by year. (The other one is “Fishing the Pecos,” dated ’03.)
After Bernie’s death in 2020, I decided to take all the “Early Bernie” paintings out of their dated frames and have them professionally photographed. They now have a brand-new life… available for sale as originals or as large, top-quality archival prints.
Bernie would be thrilled to see “Village in Winter” and its three Wisconsin companions — “Winter Whites,” “Gathering Outside the Church,” and “Sleepy Sheep” — on this website… a technology that neither one of us could have dreamed of when he painted them.
This original painting is available for purchase, as are top-quality, custom-made giclée prints.

And then there are Bernie’s rough sketches from the trip to France–reproduced in a booklet that I have. Wonder if he ever thought of painting from those. But, there is so much material from your life together and from which to choose for follow up as a painting. Too much source material for one painter’s lifetime.
Paul, he actually did some plein air paintings during our last trip to France in 1998. I still have three of the framed ones.
But yes, that sketchbook that he gave you is very special. I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed it and wanted to keep it all these years. It’s even more special now that he’s gone, isn’t it? I’ve got one too, and I’ll treasure it to the end of my days.
