MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ LOVELY “GATHERING OUTSIDE THE CHURCH”:

Bernie made this plein air watercolor on one of our 1970s outings into Wisconsin and kept it, carefully protected in a portfolio, for the rest of his life.

“Why?” you may ask.

Well, I suspect it’s because this was his first attempt to portray a large group of people in one setting. He mastered the art of doing that decades later in such distinctive works as “Festive Celebration,” “Jewelry Sellers on the Plaza,” “Santa Fe Indian Market” and “Santa Fe Market.” This one wasn’t up to the quality of those later paintings, but still, it was meaningful to him.

After Bernie’s death, I gave this original painting to a long-time friend from the 1970s. Before letting it go, however, I had it professionally photographed. So now I can offer large, top-quality giclée prints in all sizes from small to larger than the original size.

Bernie would be thrilled to see his decades-old Wisconsin watercolors — “Gathering Outside the Church” plus “Village in Winter,” “Winter Whites,” and “Sleepy Sheep” — on this website… a technology that neither one of us could have dreamed of when he made these paintings.
