Festive Celebration
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ JOYFUL WATERCOLOR “FESTIVE CELEBRATION”:
Every summer, Santa Fe, New Mexico has a series of popular outdoor events. There’s Indian Market. There’s Spanish Market. There are art fairs of all kinds.
This particular scene is from Santa Fe’s Spanish Market, which falls in late July and is sponsored by the Spanish Colonial Arts Society. It offers a fascinating combination of experiences. There are family events, concerts, street entertainers, musicians in the streets and the Bandshell, and so on. And of course there are religious traditions. One of the most memorable moments is when the Archbishop of Santa Fe emerges from his Cathedral to bless the assembled masses. Mariachi musicians and other church leaders accompany him down San Francisco Street toward the Plaza.
And that’s what we see here. Bernie actually painted two variations of this same scene. This is the watercolor version, made in his studio from sketches and photos made on the scene. The oil painting that he made later is “Procession from the Cathedral.” As of this writing, both original paintings are available for purchase.
