BERNARD MARKS WROTE THIS ABOUT HIS AMAZINGLY COMPLEX OIL PAINTING “SANTA FE INDIAN MARKET”:
“Santa Fe Indian Market” is a bird-eye rendition of the spectacular presentation of Native American art market that Santa Fe, New Mexico, hosts every summer. This amazing art show attracts an international throng of over 175,000 people each year. I’ve painted it many times… and in every medium I know how to use.
On this occasion, the scene that I had in mind was complex, incorporating many figures and buildings. I decided to start with a “cartoon,” the term medieval artists used to describe a preliminary drawing. I did the drawing in full scale and later transferred it to the final surface, canvas in this case, before starting to apply the oil paints.
MARTHA MARKS ADDS: This original painting was huge and mind-bogglingly beautiful. It “flew off the wall” right after after Bernie finished it. I’m glad to be able to offer excellent giclée prints of it here.
