Indian Market at La Fonda

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ ENERGETIC WATERCOLOR “INDIAN MARKET AT LA FONDA”:

Indian Market is a big deal in Santa Fe. It happens every August, a spectacular show of Native American arts and crafts. Thousands of people come from around the world every year. But… why do they come here instead of, say, New York? Many of them just enjoy seeing the very best of modern Native American arts and crafts. Fine-art collectors come specifically to buy the winning pieces.

Bernie repeatedly painted the people and places associated with this exciting event. He never tired of finding new angles to reveal its many levels of culture, history, and humanity.

In this energetic watercolor, we’re walking straight out from the Cathedral, heading down San Francico Street, past La Fonda hotel on the left, toward the Plaza. We’re enjoying a four hundred-year-old city that is alive and beautiful… a happy place to be.

La Fonda (Spanish for “the inn”) is commonly known as “the inn at the end of the trail.” And that means, of course, the original old Santa Fe Trail. This landmark path made its way across a large expanse of the country and ended right here, at the corner opposite La Fonda. There has been an inn of some sort or other on this spot for as long as Santa Fe has existed.

In all, twelve of Bernie’s paintings of Santa Fe’s Indian Market and its “twin” event Spanish Market —of all sizes, prices, and media—are offered on this site:
