MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ LIVELY WATERCOLOR, “INDIAN MARKET CORNER”:
If you’ve been exploring the PEOPLE page of our Watercolor Figures section, you may think with “Indian Market Corner” you’re seeing double. You may think, literally, that you’ve seen this painting before. Well, there’s a perfectly good reason for that déjà vu feeling.
Over the years, Bernie actually did a number of Indian Market paintings from this same high vantage point. It’s a natural spot to look down on one of the busiest corners of Santa Fe’s historic Plaza. And lots of activity guarantees that his paintings were notably different each time. That’s true, even if the angles of the street and tents and builldings and lamp posts are always the same.
Another variation of this scene is “Afternoon at Indian Market.” The two paintings are similar but not really the same. That’s because he made them on two different years. The basic downtown Santa Fe scene remained the same over time. However, the people and their bright summertime clothes and the individual displays varied from year to year.
