Abiquiu Lake and Pedernal
BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS LOVELY WATERCOLOR OF A REAL-LIFE SPOT, “ABIQUIU LAKE AND PEDERNAL”:
Formed by ancient volcanic flows, Pedernal (shown in the background on the right) is one of the most recognizable landmarks in New Mexico.
This world-famous lake lies beneath the formation locally known as “Pedernal,” without “the.” Both of them were the subject of many Georgia O’Keeffe paintings. Her ashes were scattered on Pedernal after her death.
Pedernal is located on the north side of the Jemez (pronounced HEY-mez) Mountains near the town of Abiquiu (pronounced a-BIH-cue) and Ghost Ranch, where O’Keeffe made her home.
