Cottonwood by the Chama River
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ “COTTONWOOD BY THE CHAMA RIVER” IN GEORGIA O’KEEFFE COUNTRY:
Bernie loved two northern New Mexico rivers. Not surprisingly, both are federally designated Wild and Scenic Rivers.
The Pecos River was one. The Chama River was the other. It was easier to get to the Pecos from Santa Fe, and there were always fishermen to paint. So he probably went there more often.
But the Chama was undoubtedly more grandly scenic. Following in the footsteps of the famous artist Georgia O’Keeffe, he went there many times. He painted the Chama River over and over, every chance he got. He sold most of those pieces but kept a few for his own enjoyment. “Cottonwood by the Chama” is one of the latter.
Bernie loved the brilliant autumn colors and the riparian setting of this watercolor. He never offered it for sale, but kept it safely protected at home for well over a decade. I’m delighted to be able to offer it now to some other lucky lover of great rivers and trees and Georgia O’Keeffe.
MARTHA MARKS NOTES: In total, this website offers four of Bernie’s oils and acrylics of the same “Georgia O’Keeffe Country”: “Above Abiquiu Lake,” “Ghost Ranch Landmarks,” “Morning Light on Abiquiu Lake and Pedernal,” and “Sunset Over Abiquiu Lake.“
His watercolors of the same area are: “Abiquiu Lake and Pedernal,” “Cottonwood by the Chama River,” “Chama River in Fall,” “Plaza Blanca,“ “Rio Chama Overlook” and “The Chama River.“
NOTE: Abiquiu is pronounced a-BIH-cue.
