The Chama River
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ DELICATE WATERCOLOR “THE CHAMA RIVER” FROM NORTHERN NEW MEXICO:
Bernie painted the Chama River (in Spanish Río Chama) so many times and in so many weather conditions that he almost certainly could have done it in his sleep. It’s a notably stunning place in the fall, so of course he made a lot of pieces in that season. Somehow, he always found ways to make each one unique and special.
I wish I could offer prints of Bernie’s earliest plein air watercolor paintings of the Chama River, the ones he made and sold between 2001-2003, when he was just beginning to explore northern New Mexico. Unfortunately, the digital photos that remain from that time are not good enough to make the kind of giclée prints that we sell here.
Based on the significantly higher resolution of the digital photograph that we use to make this particular print, I believe Bernie must have painted it between 2004 and 2006.

NOTE: Abiquiu is pronounced ah-bih-cue.
