Indian Market and Cathedral

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ WATERCOLOR OF INDIAN MARKET AND ST FRANCIS CATHEDRAL:

For nine years, Bernie and I lived two blocks from Santa Fe’s historic and famous Plaza. Several days a week, we would stroll over around noon to soak up the authentic Mexican or New Mexican food on offer at nearby restaurants. We’d watch people interact with one another as their assorted dogs did the same. But most of all, we’d just soak up the ambience of St Francis Cathedral and the Plaza.

But Bernie almost always went by himself to Indian Market in Santa Fe. That’s because his goal for those visits either was to make a plein air watercolor or — if the crowds were just too big — sketching and taking reference photos that he would later turn into polished studio pieces. I’m not a fan of crowds, so I usually stayed home on those days.

Even so, I loved seeing the wonderful plein air watercolors that he produced… the same ones that I’m now making available as prints on this website.

In all, twelve of Bernie’s paintings of Santa Fe’s Indian Market and its “twin” event Spanish Market —of all sizes, prices, and media—are offered on this site:
